First Friday in May around Puget Sound

Allied Arts of Whatcom County, 1418 Cornwall in Bellingham, is sponsoring an exhibit from over 30 local teaching artists with the Allied Arts Education Project.  As part of the 2012 Children’s Art Walk from 6-9pm, the show honors the statewide “Arts in Education Month”. Among the display of teacher art are works by Donna Washington, Ben Mann, Ellen Clark, Janet Lehwalder, Jacquie Bresadola; and 2010 Mayor’s Art Award winner Thor Myhre.


Anchor Art, 216 Commercial Ave in Anacortes, is showcasing a group show called “Take Me with You, drawings from near and far,” in a reception during the Anacortes Art Walk from 6-9pm.


bainbridge arts “Hats” opens in a reception from 6-8pm at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts, 151 Winslow Way. Working in glass, paper, paint, and found objects, the artists uncover the inner life of crowns, bonnets, helmets, fedoras, mouse ears, and glamorous chapeaux. Artists include Amy Williams d’Apice, Pam BergLundh, Karen Buhler, Linda Costello, Mary McInnis, Julie Paschkis, and Deborah Peek. Vanbianchi will talk about her life and art on May 5 at 12:30pm. This month the gallery is also sponsoring an elementary school show through May 19 and a high school show from May 23-27. Shown at the left: Peggy Vanbianchi, Arctic Circle.


New work by Becky Fletcher and Patty Detzer will be showing at Gallery Cygnus, 109 Commercial in La Conner,  beginning May 4 and continuing through June 24.  Opening celebration is from 3-5 pm on Saturday, May 5.


funnar Gunnar Nordstrom Gallery, 800 Bellevue Way NE in Bellevue, invites all to join him from 5-8pm in a “Finissage” and Friday Happy Hour featuring works by Theodor Seuss Geisel.   Also on hand is jewelry designer Martin Kneeland with Vinosus Jewelry. One of the Seuss pieces is show at the right.


An artist reception will be held at Ornamental Arts Gallery, on Friday, May 4 from 4-7 p.m. at 13805 Smokey Point Blvd. Suite 105 Marysville. Refreshments provided.  The featured artists will be Helen Lueken and Lucinda Van Valkenburg.  Lucinda is a woodworker using many locally found recycled hardwoods. Helen works with soft pastels, watercolor and oils.


Opening from 6-8pm at Roby King Galleries, 176 Winslow Way E. on Bainbridge Island, is a show featuring Diane Ainsworth and David Turner. Their show, "Pertaining to the Sea" is about life around the Puget Sound, working on the water, playing on the water, or just viewing the water.


“Vessels, “ a group exhibition featuring artists working in a variety of different media, is on view through the month of May at Smith & Vallee Gallery, 5742 Gilkey Avenue in Edison.  The show explores a very broad definition of a vessel – displaying vessel as ceramic objects, vessel as boat or craft, and vessel as container or cavity.


theisland The Island Gallery, 400 Winslow Way on Bainbridge Island, showcases Susan C. Petersen’s “Card Art” through May 27. As part of her artistic repertoire, the Bainbridge Island artist designs one-of-a-kind keepsake cards using natural fiber papers, hand-gathered pressed flowers, leaves, seaweed and found objects, embellished with paints, inks and pastels.
