First Friday December openings

ArtEAST, an art collective at Up Front Art in Issaquah at 48 Front Street,  presents "Out of the Box," a show that challenges member artists to think outside the box. Beginning with a box or cube, they will stretch their boundaries to create something unique, and produce a vast variety of interpretations of the box.

Bainbridge Arts and Crafts
, 151 Winslow Way E., holiday show, "Out of this World," combines the celestial and the extraterrestrial. The poetry of the stars, planets, moons, and galaxies will hover in the gallery. And right there next to the grandeur of the constellations will be, uh, spacemen, ray-guns, and (really) the starship Enterprise in glorious neon. On view through December 31. Drop City Gallery's Inaugural Exhibition, "A Ben Waterman Project: Reckoning of Mile," is an installation of 16,180 hand formed ceramic rail spikes representing the number of railroad spikes in one mile. The gallery is located below the Glenn Richards showroom at 964 Denny Way, Seattle. Opening reception with the artist 6-9pm. On view through January 26th, 2008.

Matt Jones and friends at Gasworks Gallery, located at 3815 4th. Ave. in Seattle, are celebrating the beginning of their 4th year at the gallery and the delivery of 90,000 lbs of spuds to Northwest Harvest for the holidays.

Insights Gallery
, 516 Commercial Ave. in Anacortes opens for the Anacortes Holiday Art Walk tonight from 6-9pm with "Petite Pieces Part II,"  featuring an array of diverse artwork on a small scale by 24 Northwest artists. On view through December 29. Shown at the left is Aviary Wonders by Anne Schreivogl.

The Island Gallery, located at 100-104 Madison Ave. N. on Bainbridge, opens "Wild Winter Whimsy, Third Annual Wearable Art Show," its annual celebration of wearable art – clothing, jewelry, and accessories - with work by local, national and international artists, for the Bainbridge First Friday Art Walk from 6-8pm. Oasis Gallery
, 3644 N. Wallingford Avenue., Seattle,  celebrates local artists during the First Friday Fremont Art Walk from 6-9pm. Featured at the reception will be live music by guitarist Barry Pollack who has played with Ray Charles and Bob Diddley as well as many other famous artists and companies.

The Orange Splot Gallery (one of Seattle's newest fine art galleries) opens for the First Friday Fremont Art Walk with an exhibit featuring works from four local artists: Suzan Azadi, Jon Patrick Olson, Laure Soshnick and Barry Bielli. The gallery is located in Fremont next to the Triangle Lounge. The cross streets are Fremont Pl N & Evanston Ave N.

Artist Sandra Bowden delivers a lecture on her work and the exhibit "Word As Image,"  December 7 at 7 p.m. at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 109 SW Normandy Road in Seattle. For more information, call 206.241.1606. "Word As Image" explores the interaction of images and the biblical text.  Her work has been displayed internationally, and is part of the collections of The Vatican Museum of Contemporary Religious Art, The Museum of Biblical Art.

Scott Milo Gallery
, located at 420 Commercial Avenue in Anacortes,   features Joel Brock's pastels and acrylics. Also showing are oils by Dederick Ward, Polaroid Transfers by Lewis Jones, Large Format Photography by Dick Garvey, acrylics by Jennifer Bowman, oils by Diane Ainsworth, floral still life color photography by Randy Dana and pastels by Steve Hill. Cynthia Smidt’s depictions of spirit will be on display at Skala Spa located at 600 N. 36th St., Suite 226 Seattle, in an opening for the Fremont First Friday Art Walk from 6-9pm.

December 2007 First Thursday

Bluebottle Art Gallery, 415 East Pine Street,is showing Michael Slack artist, illustrator, and character designer.  His paintings and drawings are exhibited in the U.S. and Europe. The show ends December 30.

D’Adamo/Woltz Gallery, 307 Occidental Avenue S., exhibits work of local photographers in "Form, Light, Shadow" until February 4. A 2007 PONCHO Best of Show winner (Evergreens), Patricia Ridenour, shows another side of her visual voice with  Pompeii Angels (part of a collection at NOMA).   Jesse Young’s black and white photographs and the landscapes of Lisa Jacoby are also included in the show.

Davidson Galleries, 313 Occidental Avenue S., opens in the  contemporary print and drawing center with new work by gallery artists. Antique Print Department at Davidson Galleries features a selection of 20th century American Prints from their current and recent print catalogs which will include works by a number of prominent American artists

Davidson Contemporary, 310 South Washington Street, opens on First Thursday with Liza vonRosenstiel in "Circular Devotion," a new show reflecting a strong sense of her NW roots. Also showing is "Personal Narrative," a group show with artists exploring different ways to suggest the elements of a story in a single image. Shown at the left is Rich Lehl's The Other Side.

Edd Cox Studio, 629 Western Building, celebrates the  season with an open studio exhibition.

Glasshouse Studio, 311 Occidental Avenue S., presents Christopher Sternberg-Powidzki who started blowing glass at the age of 15 at Thames Glass in Newport, Rhode Island.  He has trained with Bennett Jordan, Lino Tagliapietra and Petr Novatny. Shown  at the right is one of his pieces.

Lisa Harris Gallery, 1922 Pike Place in Seattle, opens First Thursday with a reception for Peter De Lory for his exhibit, "Balance, Recent Photographs," on view through December 29. The artist’s photographs are included in such museum collections as the Art Institute of Chicago, The Walker Art Center, San Francisco Museum of Art, Cincinnati Art Museum, Smithsonian, Seattle Art Museum, National Gallery of Canada, and in many universities and corporations nationwide. Most recently he has collaborated on public art projects at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, the Wenatchee Convention Center, and Longfellow Creek Trail in Seattle. Pratt Fine Arts Center features an opening night party from 6-9pm in celebration of their holiday art sale. Pratt Gallery in the Tashiro Kaplan Building in Pioneer Square features Pratt jewelry artists and Washington State Enamelists partnering to display a wide variety of work. The show focuses on enamels and the community of artists working in this medium and will be on view until December 29.

PUNCH Gallery, 119 Prefontaine Pl. South, and SOIL Gallery, 112 3rd Ave South, team up to present the work of 16 artists from across the US and beyond. Nearly 1000 entries were submitted from more than 300 artists. Juried by Eric Fredericksen, director of Western Bridge, this exhibition includes a focused assemblage of photography, video, sculpture, ink on paper, cough drop labels and other mixed media. Themes include spills, spots, piles, trash, smoke, mirrors, bread, sunsets, Jesus, trees, motor homes, and a poodle. On view

R E Welch Gallery, 1214 First Avenue, showcases French painter Jean Triolet in "Painter of Felicity," Triolet mixes figurative with the abstract to create balance between imagination and execution. On view through December 31. Shown at theright is Symphonie en rouge.

Traver Gallery Seattle, 110 Union Street, presents "Move, "a solo exhibition of new work by Seattle artist Richard Royal. The show features a selection of large-scale, solid-worked glass sculptures from the artist's Aperture series. Royal at Pilchuck Glass School where he assisted artists such as Dale Chihuly, William Morris and Benjamin Moore. His work is included in numerous public and private collections and has been shown at galleries and museums throughout the United States.

Also showing is "Touch," a solo exhibition featuring new sculptures by French glass artist Nadège Desgenétez. Nadège has received numerous prizes and awards throughout the years, including the Prix d'Honneur de la Fondation de France and the Prix de la Vocation from the Fondation Marcel Bleustein Blanchet. She has completed artist residencies at Northlands Creative Glass in Scotland, Pittsburgh Glass Center and the Museum of Glass in Tacoma. The research and making of the work for the exhibition Touch was made possible by the support of the Australia Council for the Arts and Arts ACT. Both exhibits are on view through January. The Traver gallery will closes for the holidays, December 24 - January 2. Shown at the left is Royal's Alter.

Some Space, 625 First Ave, opens on First Thursday with "Float, Flitter, Fade: New works by Noah Overby.

Wall Space Gallery, 600 First Avenue, Suite 322, invited the public to a special holiday  soiree in celebration of "Home for the Holidays," on view through December 22.
