Conservation at SAM

The Stranger's Jen Graves has a wonderful video up this week featuring Seattle Art Museum conservator Nicholas Dorman, who explains the painstaking restoration of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's The Triumph of Valor Over Time, scheduled to be part of the new Seattle Art Museum grand opening in May. The video is short but surely worthwhile to better understand the efforts a good museum goes through to preserve beautiful works from the past. Read Jen's  article and watch the video here. Pictured is The Triumph of Valor over Time, 1755-1760,Oil on canvas, Venetian School, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo  Italy, 1696 - 1770 23 1/2 x 17 in. Margie Livingston discusses the process of creating

I don't know about you, but I love podcasts. Jen Graves' interview with award-winning artist, Margie Livingston, is all about the creation and inspiration of her work. Livingston's current exhibit is on view at the Greg Kucera Gallery until April 28.  She also has a thing or two to say about -- hairballs?

Rebecca V Gallery debuts in Tacoma

According to Natasha Jaksich at the Tacoma Weekly, Tacoma's newest gallery is showcasing classic art in a comfortable setting and is "off to a great start if the success of its grand opening March 10 is any indication." Kelly Joseph, director of the gallery, said that " 'the gallery is the product of a collective vision to build a gallery that serves the community while showcasing dynamic, high-quality fine art.' " Rebecca V Gallery is located at 3010 6th. Avenue in Tacoma.

Critical Line Gallery closes In Tacoma

According to the Tacoma News Tribune, Critical Line Gallery has closed its doors just a few short months after opening last May. The paper quoted former director Jared Pappas-Kelley, also the director of Critical Line’s umbrella organization ArtRod, who said "Funding was getting tight, and we just didn’t have the resources." The Tollbooth, Art Rod's other project, will remain open.

A few standouts at the Tacoma Northwest Biennial

Writing for the Seattle Weekly, Adrianna Grant says, "There may not be much cohesion among the pieces selected for the Tacoma Art Museum's 8th Annual Northwest Biennial, but there are a few standout works that make the exhibit worth a visit. The exhibition's introductory text, from curators Rock Hushka of TAM and David Kiehl of the Whitney, says the show's theme is "beauty," which is certainly broad enough, with works organized around the only slightly less inclusive categories of abstraction, landscape, humor, and figuration. But no matter. This show offers a chance to see some great individual pieces by some of Seattle's most interesting artists." Click here to read the whole review.

Porcelain fit for a king at the new SAM

Sheila Farr, writing for the  Seattle Times, says, "When Seattle Art Museum opens its new expansion May 5, you will find a room lined with 1,000 prized porcelain pieces from Asia and Europe: some functional, some sculptural, dating from the seventh through the mid-19th centuries. SAM has the most important collection of porcelain on the West Coast, says decorative-arts curator Julie Emerson, and some of it has not been shown before."
